He walked between bracken and through ferns, with Leafy beside him, until he was back in the woods he recognised, and when he turned round to watch her go, he found he was looking at the farmer’s fields.

The electric fence hummed gently and the wind pushed the rows of green stalks back and forth.

He looked at the acorn in his palm and thought what nonsense it all was.

And he pulled his arm back and threw it, as far as he could, out into the crops.

Except he didn’t.

He tucked it into his pocket almost without noticing.
